TL;DR

Intel is moving up its manufacturing timelines for its new 18A process. We also briefly discuss advances in hopping robots and neutral atom quantum computing.

Intel Moves up 18A to 2024

Intel reported a challenging quarter as it barely met its revenue projections (source). Nonetheless Intel is charging ahead on its investments in the future of chip manufacturing and has even announced that it is moving up the projected launch date of its Intel 18A chips.

Intel’s $3 billion fab expansion in Oregon is now open for business (source).
The new high numerical aperture (High NA) EUV devices installed in Intel’s new plant are considerably larger than already massive standard EUV devices (source).
Intel’s new technical roadmap is considerably accelerated with Intel 18A set for the second half of 2024. If Intel executes on this roadmap, it may indeed be able to catch up to TSMC but considerable challenges remain (source).

A Hopping Robot

Roboticists at UCSB and Disney Research have created a novel robot that can hop 33 meters with a single leap (source).

Today’s superconducting qubit quantum computers have faced major scaling difficulties in reaching large numbers of qubits. Neutral atoms may provide a better pathway towards scalable quantum computing.
